In today's world there are many uses for plastics. Numerous household, commercial and industrial things are made from plastic. In my first post I mentioned a couple of things. This post I will tell about a few more items we use everyday.
As many of us wander through each day grabbing for a bottle of water, what is it that we are really grasping in our hands. This would be the water bottle. Made from a form of plastic called PET or Polyethylene Terephthalate. Even though we can crush this bottle with little ease, the plastic is flexible and durable enough to withstand this force and not break. That is due to the molecular structure of the plastic. The bottles are made from a process call blow molding. This involves a blob of plastic being placed in a mold that is shaped like a bottle and air blown into it.
Fascinating how its made.....
How many use a computer, sit in a chair or drive a car everyday? Yes, all of these are made completely of plastic or have plastic components. Automobiles have some plastic components that are used for fuel injection, oil pressure and even brake systems. These have been engineered to withstand all the harsh weather and corrosive liquids. They have been tested numerous times to ensure no break down of the material over the life of the part.
Next time you are in the grocery store or hardware store, pick up an item made of plastic and ask yourself, how does this affect me and the environment?

I'm sure you have questions about plastic, like what is plastic? Where does it come from? What can be made of plastic?
Let's first talk about what plastic is. Plastic is a compound of different chemicals that are either synthetic or organic that can be shaped and molded into different forms. Plastic can be many different objects we use everyday. Many of us do not know how these are made or even think about the effects of plastic in our daily lives. So, where does plastic really come from? Plastic is derived from fossils fuels, crude oil and natural gas. Using a mixture of these resources, carbon and other chemicals there can be many different types of plastic.
An example of a plastic is PVC, like you would find in the plumbing section of your local hardware store. Mostly the pipes and fittings you would use in your home. Another example is nylon, you can find it in many forms, usually as a washer that would come with a piece of furniture you assemble. Nylon can also be the handle of a paintbrush or toothbrush.
